The Setting

The year is 1116, and the Further Kingdoms are still reeling from the devestation of the last war…

The World of Everfall has not been the same since the elves were evicted from their homeland and forced into vagrancy. Not since the dragons decided to wage war against the peaceful kingdoms and subsequently went extinct. Nor since the Further Kingdoms were split apart by greedy leaders and their ambitions for greater power. But now, perhaps, Everfall faces its greatest hardships yet — recovering from the damage done in the Dondros War and moving forward into a time of uneasy peace. Once upon a time, there were heroes. Alas, that is no longer the case…

Inspirations

Inspired mainly by the creative nature of Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, and by eighties pulp fantasy fiction novels, Everfall is a world full of intrigue and adventure on the brink of collapse. It is a place where all the legends have gone, and there are no more heroes. A world slipping into the dark. Yet there are glimmers of hope in between the pages. Moments of unexpected heroism and altruism. Good people living in the dark. Slithers that defy the grimdark demeanour of the setting. Something more akin to grimlight, perhaps?

The Main Story

While the World of Everfall is massive, the books, and the contents of this blog primarily revolve around a large continent in the setting known as the Further Kingdoms. Once a united front under the wisdom of kings, it now exists as a fractured sprinkling of tiny kingdoms with disenchanting leaders. Its troubles started hundreds of years ago when the last king of Aldor abdicated the throne, eliciting a struggle for power in the absence of that authority. These kingdoms did, however, manage to join together and unite fifteen years ago to fight off the demonic menace to the south. That didn’t last long. With the conclusion of the Dondros War, underlying challenges and problems arose, quickly leading to the division of the realms yet again.

One of those problems was, and still is, the dwarves. It is no secret that the parliaments of dwarven power have always despised the fracturing of the Further Kingdoms. It’s a wrong they wish to see put right. At the end of the Dondros War, with the largest army still standing, the dwarves attempted to gain the seat of power. They offered their forces in return for fealty, of which few kingdoms acquiesced, and now make great strides across the Further Kingdoms as the self-proclaimed rightful monarchs of the throne.

No one is quite sure how this is all going to end, though most assume it will end badly. In this less-than-idealistic world, altruistic individuals and people of heroic renown are whispers of the past, concepts that died with the last war. It’s every person for themself, but does it need to remain this way? Can Everfall once again find the heroes it needs to fend off the dark? There’s only one sure way to find out…
